About Jenny Milne
(also known as
Sad Film Club)
I graduated in 2019 from Gray’s School of Art with a degree in Contemporary Art Practice with a specialism in photography. During my time at university my work explored the themes of grief, nostalgia, and memory, and their significance in relation to objects.
Since then my work has grown to include lino printing which is now central to my current art practice. I have found this exploration of a new medium restorative and it has reignited my enthusiasm for drawing and the creative process in general. Before going to University I thought about becoming an illustrator, but while studying I unexpectedly took another direction by focusing on film photography, digital photography, and filmmaking. In 2019 after deciding to try lino printing, I started an anonymous Instagram account under the name Sad Film Club in order to explore the contemporary world of printmaking, this way I could also post my prints at my own pace. Over a year later I opened an Etsy shop under the same name.
Experimentation is at the core of my practice. This can be seen in my photography where I often shoot with expired film, a method that leaves the possibility of failure and the need to adapt my process. I find this allows me to become more involved in the creation rather than focusing on the result. It is this consciousness that I am trying to apply to my practice as a whole, building new skills and following my curiosity.
Currently I am mainly focusing on making lino prints inspired by a blend of themes including; my love of nature, literature, horror, and Scottish folklore, and using my filmmaking skills to document the process.
