Gray’s School of Art Degree Show 2019

My degree show space was a small room which normally functioned as one of the changing rooms for the schools’ life models. The space had a small shower at the back, of which I used the tiled wall to project my films onto. The rest of the room was dimly illuminated with darkroom lights - with one regular red bulb for safety - and also included a darkroom enlarger and a low table with photos floating in water. Opposite the table I carefully nailed around 30 receipts on to the wall in a grid.

Through my practice I explored ways of deciphering ‘traces’ and out of context objects by approaching them in a detached manner. This included exploring ways of arranging and curating items in such a way which leaves their meaning or relevance open to the viewer. I used photography and moving image with my objects to create installations to allow the audience to ‘step into’ my work. It was my intention to invite people to evaluate their relationships towards their own belongings: whether this means realising the need to move on from something insignificant, or to give more appreciation to something personal.
