The Forager
“The Forager” is the first of my large prints. The planning started in October of 2021 and the first print was finally pulled in June 2022. Since this is a large block, it took some time to carve - not to mention drawing it, preparing the block, transferring the image to the block, and the actual printing! As an artist in the age of social media I often feel pressure to be constantly creating and posting eye-catching images but the reality is that quality and heartfelt work takes time. The making of “The Forager” was a reminder to slow down and appreciate the creative process.
My process for this print began slowly over the course of 2020-2021 when life was still suspended because of the pandemic. I would walk the same few routes around Aberdeen and I began to observe the different plants that appeared throughout the year, with bramble berry season in the North-East of Scotland happening from late July to as late as October. Bramble picking is an ancient act of foraging which is still commonly practised today, and serves as a much needed connection between modern life and nature.
